Peepaw and the Squirrels Part 1

My bride of 45 years gave me a bird feeder for Fathers Day.  I went to Lowe's to find an 'S' hook to complete hanging the feeder on a tree limb.  While perusing the bird feeder supplies, I came across a nice block of corn and seeds that came with a bungee cord hanger line.  Aha, something to keep the squirrels away from the feeder.  So I bought it and a larger hanger.  The fuzzy tail tree rats enjoyed it.  The white wing doves, a.k.a.white wing tree rats, make a bigger mess around the feeder and the squirrels ignored the feeder even when their chew toy was gone.

Breakfast time.

Snack time

Let's bounce

Biiiggg stretch

 You've had enough,   My turn!

Hmmm not much left.  Hope he puts out more.

Greedy little buggers cleaned house.

Thus ends the corn block on the bungee episode.  It lasted maybe four days.  I went back to buy a replacement and they were out.  Started thinking that I had made it too easy for them to get to the corn block.  There was a big bag of corn on the cob for the same price as a new block.  Bought it and started a new feeding scheme which will be covered in the next episode.

I remembered  I started this blog some time ago when I read the first chapter of a new blog started by a friend.  So it's time to ponder. It appears that spring has arrived in South Texas.  The bluebonnets are blooming, but small because of lack of rain.  Will post pictures later.

The plumeria (a.k.a. frangipani) is forest out of the garage and most are back on the patio.  A couple are in another spot in the yard in an experiment to see if they bloom better.

The Monterey Oaks or Mexican White Oaks finished shedding their leaves.  Took three separate leaf mowings to get things cleaned up.  Now that the trees are leafing out, I can remove the bird netting used to keep the leaves out of the timber pond water garden and start getting it back in shape.  Looks like half a dozen of the small feeder fish I added late last summer survived.  Time to go to Pet Smart or Petco and get some more 29 cents feeder gold fish.

And speaking of Petco, I volunteer at the Texas Animal Defense League shelter.  We had an off site adoption event at the Petco Unleashed store (a small store with just pet food and other supplies, no animals for sale) today.  Had small and medium sized dogs.  Most were laid back, but one got a bit yappy and got the others started yapping when it was supposed to be nap time.  She got the time out treatment.
None were adopted when my shift ended, but a couple of families were going to come back with other family members and possibly adopt Trip, a male German Shepard mix who is an active goofy guy and needs a big yard.

This pair of lady chihuahuas, Rose (brown) and Sophia (black and white), two little "Golden Girls," was also available.  Sophia just relaxed most of the time while Rose begged, whined, and wheedled her way into the lap of the ADL staff member with us.  Sophia's reaction seemed to be, "Thank heavens, she's out of the cage!  Now I can go back to napping"

That's all for today's ponderings.

The First Entry

Why "Peepaw's Ponderings"?  I am the grandfather of two (Jamie Lynne and Kate Louise) and three-quarters (Lucy Elizabeth) granddaughters, three-quarters because the newest granddaughter (Kate's little sister) is due November 4.  The important thing, and possibly the most important, about being a grandparent is "the Name," i.e., your official title, Grandpa, Granddad, or whatever. The process is similar the "naming" of a fighter pilot, you do not have a choice in the matter, it's controlled by parents of you first grandchild. Thus, I became "Peepaw" and my wife became "Meemaw" probably because it would be easier to say (and doesn't sound quite as old) and the other set of grandparents received the "G-word" name.

This is my official Peepaw stamp personally carved by our son and given to me on my birthday this year.  It is used to sign the letters I write to Jamie and Kate.

After reading several blogs my friends write, I decided I could do that and have jumped into the fray.  Entries will happen when the muse taps me on the shoulder and suggests it is time to tap on the keys and add random ponderings.

Now it's time for Peepaw to hit the sack.

Sweet dreams y'all
